What is the difference between internal and external TPMS sensors?
Internal sensors attach inside the tire and replace your valve stem. External sensors screw onto the outside of your existing valve stem.
Internal sensors give you a cleaner look and better protection from theft or damage. External sensors are easier to install and remove, since you do not need to break the tire bead.
Can I use external TPMS sensors on rubber valve stems?
Most manufacturers recommend metal valve stems for external sensors. Rubber stems can bend under the added weight of the sensor, especially at higher speeds.
If you only have rubber stems, check your sensor's weight rating first. Some lighter external sensors are rated safe for rubber stems, but you should confirm this before installing.
How long do motorcycle TPMS sensor batteries last?
Most sensor batteries last between one and three years. This depends on how often you ride and how the sensor transmits data.
Sensors that send readings more frequently will drain faster. Cold weather can also shorten battery life, since low temperatures reduce battery output.
Are motorcycle TPMS sensors weatherproof?
Yes, most TPMS sensors are built to handle rain, dust, and road debris. Manufacturers typically rate them with an IP65 or higher waterproof rating.
This means you can ride in wet conditions without worrying about sensor failure. However, extreme conditions like deep water submersion can still cause damage.
Why does my tire pressure increase while riding?
Tire pressure rises as the air inside heats up from friction and road contact. This is a normal part of riding, and pressure can increase by several PSI during a long ride.
You should always check and set your tire pressure when tires are cold. This gives you an accurate baseline reading.
What should I set my high and low-pressure alarm thresholds to?
Your alarm thresholds should follow the pressure range listed in your motorcycle owner's manual. Most riders set the low alarm about 10% below their recommended cold pressure.
For high-pressure alarms, many riders choose a threshold 15-20% above their cold setting. This range accounts for normal pressure increases during riding without causing false alarms.
Can a TPMS sensor cause a tire leak?
A poorly installed sensor can cause a leak, especially if the seal is not tight. This is more common with internal sensors that require careful installation.
Using the wrong torque on the valve stem nut can also damage the seal. You should follow the manufacturer's torque specifications exactly.
Why is the display not showing data for one or both tires?
This often happens when a sensor's battery has died or the sensor lost its connection to the receiver. Check the battery status first before assuming there is a bigger problem.
You may also need to re-pair the sensor with your display unit. Most systems have a simple pairing process listed in the manual.
What causes the TPMS signal to drop out while riding?
Signal dropouts often happen due to interference from other electronics on your bike. Metal components, GPS units, and phone mounts can all interfere with the signal.
Distance between the sensor and receiver also matters. If your receiver is mounted too far from the tires, you may experience more frequent signal loss.
Why does the TPMS reading differ from my handheld pressure gauge?
Small differences between readings are common and usually fall within a 1-2 PSI range. This happens because TPMS sensors and handheld gauges use different measurement methods.
If the difference is larger than 3 PSI, you should check your TPMS sensor calibration. Some systems allow you to adjust calibration through the display settings.
Why is the temperature reading lagging behind?
Temperature sensors need time to adjust to changes in tire heat. This lag is usually only a few seconds to a minute, depending on your system.
This delay is normal and does not affect the accuracy of your pressure readings. Pressure sensors typically respond faster than temperature sensors.
What should I do if the locking nut is stuck on the valve stem?
Apply a small amount of penetrating oil to loosen a stuck locking nut. Let it sit for a few minutes before trying to turn it again.
Avoid using excessive force, since this can damage the valve stem. If the nut still will not turn, you may need a specialized wrench designed for TPMS installation.
Why is the display unit not turning on?
Check the battery or power connection first, since this is the most common cause. If your display uses a rechargeable battery, make sure it has been charged fully.
You should also check for loose wiring if your display is hardwired to your motorcycle's electrical system. A blown fuse can also prevent the display from receiving power.
